3 Portuguese Wines to Drink Now
Three Portuguese Wines to Drink Now

Vinho Verde is one of the hottest wines in the industry right now, in part due to the never ending thirst consumers have for value wines that pack a punch. The wines of Portugal certainly pack that punch in the sense that they bring extreme value for your dollar, and more importantly, they don’t suck.

We tasted these three Vinho Verdes or “green wines”, which are perfect for any occasion or summer event. They are typically inexpensive whites with a low alcohol content in the 8-11% range. The term Vinho Verde isn’t to be confused as the varietal. In fact, the wines are made with a blend of grapes such as the Arinto, Loureiro, and Trajadura.

1. Casal Garcia – 2011 Wine & Spirits Winery of the year- $6.99

This is our favorite Vinho Verde available right now, and it’s immediately obvious why Wine & Spirits crowned them winery of the year in 2011. This wine is crisp, refreshing and so easy to drink with nothing to complain about other than how quickly it will disappear at the party you bring it to.

2. Aveleda Fonte 2009 Vinho Verde- $6.99

Aveleda Fonte is also a wonderful choice, the carbonation on your tongue is very crisp and fresh although this is not a Champagne. Read our full review of Aveleda Fonte here.

3. Gazela Vinho Verde- $6.99

Gazela is the third in the lineup of wines from Portugal to drink now. It’s also slightly carbonated, with a hint of grapefruit fizz and lively citrus notes that drinks well slightly chilled.

No matter which one you choose, your guests are guaranteed to enjoy this crisp and refreshing change of pace. Ask your friends, family and guests how much they think the wine cost you (hide the bottle) and I think you’ll be surprised at the answers you receive.
