Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2010
Santa Margherita’s 2010 Pinot Grigio has a very very light yellow color, with wonderful lightly sweet yet tart aroma that smells like a grape spree candy melted in the sun combined with sweet pear notes. It’s smooth, silky mouth feel is expertly balanced with minerality you’d expect. It’s so easy to drink that it almost feels as if it lacks some real vibrant acidity to give it some sort of kick. Having tasted many interesting wines recently, this 2010 felt dull to me initially. Alas, not all wines are created to kick you in the mouth with pizazz, and this...
Sharpe Hill Ballet of Angels
Sharpe Hill is home to New England’s best selling wine, a secret blend of upwards of 10 grape varieties that serves well as an aperitif but also pairs quite well with food. Set out on the slopes of a 700 foot hill, Sharpe Hill grows Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, St. Croix, Vignoles, Merlot and more. So what is the secret behind their successful wines? The secret may lay in the land. John Schenck wrote in the 2011-12 early winter edition of Edible Nutmeg, “A consultant from Alsace, where many great Rieslings are produced, confirmed that the soil on Sharpe Hill’s...
Westport Votes Yes to Pop-up Cafes
WESTPORT, Conn. – More outdoor seating areas may be popping-up in downtown Westport this spring. On Wednesday, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a policy that allows the creation of pop-up cafes and pop-up seating along certain one-way streets. This new policy will permit merchants along Main Street and other one-way roads to install on-street cafes or seating areas in converted curbside parking spaces outside their businesses. The policy was created by Planning and Zoning Commissioner Howard Lathrop and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Jennifer Johnson, with help from Assistant Town Attorney Gail Kelly. GMO Labeling Wins Backing in Connecticut
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut took the first step requiring producers to label genetically modified food Wednesday, as a legislative committee overwhelmingly backed a measure promoted as giving consumers more information while avoiding the debate over health concerns. The legislature’s Environment Committee voted 23-6 to approve the measure, allowing supporters to prevail over opponents who said the measure would lead to higher packaging costs. “It’s something that’s coming, and I think we can be in the forefront in helping shape how it’s done,” said Democratic Rep. Richard Roy, the committee’s House chairman. “Think of us as the mouse that roared.”...
Why Connecticut Will Continue To Pay $15 for $8 Wines
(ABOVE) Carroll Hughes, lobbyist for the Connecticut Package Stores Association, speaks at a hearing for retail alcohol sales on Sundays at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, Conn., Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012. Hughes says his group is now supporting retail sales on Sunday, but that other parts of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s plan to overhaul state liquor laws will hurt many mom-and-pop liquor stores. Vineyard Marketing Ideas for 2012
Marketing gurus and PR professionals are always on the prowl for unique ideas to create buzz for brands they’re representing. With traditional media and print as we know it on life support, each new successful digital platform launch brings us that much closer to the inevitable. Giants such as the Wall Street Journal have launched additional sites in their network such as All Things D in 2007, a site ultimately created to compete with the likes of Tech Crunch and Mashable. Speaking of Mashable, they were just acquired by CNN for a reported $200 Million. As the saying goes, if...
2010 Chateau St Jean Chardonnay
The 2010 Chardonnay from Chateau St Jean from Sonoma County is another great value out of California. Very slightly hazy, slightly oaked with just the right hint of butter providing a nice silky mouth feel. A small bit of caramelized sugar flavor, great balance with a medium finish that drinks quite well. The only downside is it comes through a little hot from the alcohol. We give this an 87 and is still a good buy at only $10-12 dollars. Perfect for those who like a little creamy chard that still has green apple on the nose. From the vineyard,...
A Dubliner’s Guide: How to Survive Saint Patrick’s Day
Barley, hops, water and yeast. Exceptional ingredients from a pristine country are carefully united to produce the finest beer in the world. Traditional craft of roasting barley gives this beer a wonderful dark ruby red color (hold your glass up to the light!). Forget the Irish car bombs, green beer, jive vodkas and all other rubbish served up in plastic cups this Saint Patrick’s day. In Ireland there is only one drink of choice. Frankly, this raw and unpretentious dram is all you’ll ever need. Step 1: Drink Guinness. Lovely sweet toasty malt, roasted grains and a bitter finish will...
